Mary told:
I’d like to leave behind my partner’s sweater that they destroyed when they were totally out of themselves. I think it was 10 years ago. It wasn’t at all easy to witness their despair, for sure, but I managed. Yet, I would like to be better at letting it go, and maybe it isn’t even so important to forget. There are surely other things I’d leave behind, but the main denominator is definitely fear. Fear makes you do things that don’t need to be done. And it was not even my own fear but theirs, that I’m talking about. From my own self, I’d like to have more order in my surroundings, that everything would be more organised than it is now. In short, I’d leave behind messiness and suffering.
To the future, I’d like to bring free Estonia. This is also a topic we discuss quite often at home. My partner says we should go to Canada if it becomes too dangerous here. But I don’t see my life outside Estonia, I have to be here. So this is my old blue passport.
About the project in Estonia
Artist Alana Proosa photographed objects brought by the participants. These objects symbolised something to leave behind and something to bring to the future. These objects are accompanied by accounts told by the interviewees.
