Hebo

An intersex transman, age 54

Apart from the fact that I was in trouble in every way, it symbolises the confused me. [F]or 25 years I was a chain smoker […] I got rid of it before our son was born. So that’s the only man in my life that I’ve given up smoking for. And I did it perfectly. I haven’t smoked a cigarette in 13 years, and I won’t. […] [T]hat’s the thing that’s totally in the past. [Along with the] person who, who was struggling, because I’m not struggling anymore.

In the future I’d like to continue with something that has been unfinished. I was put in a children’s art class, and I dare to say that I can draw pretty well. In the future, I’d like to have enough time and freedom to paint something, perhaps. This is my personal brush. I sometimes paint with it during the summer.  But my main issue is a lack of time to do that. We even have a painters’ group with whom we organise painting getaways. I’d want this for the future!

About the project in Estonia

The photographed objects were brought to the group interview by the research participants. These objects symbolised something to leave behind and something to bring to the future. The stories are excerpts from the interviews.
