Harri

A gay man, age 63

In 1991, Estonia restored independence after the coup. I was in France at the Taizé monastery. I had already been in Sweden to study, but it was still the first time for me to get to the free world. And it was a spiritual awakening. I had been Christian since I was 19, but this was perhaps more about hating the Soviet regime than being a solemn Christian, a young person’s resistance and interest in church camaraderie of the period. So I’d like to bring this spiritual state with me to overcome this obsession of being liked.

About the project in Estonia

The photographed objects were brought to the group interview by the research participants. These objects symbolised something to leave behind and something to bring to the future. The stories are excerpts from the interviews.
